Over 25 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, (ship owner) Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. Born of rain in Bergen, Norway, he could not resist the attraction of the austral sun in this Virgilian setting. Today we have 85 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec planted in Maipo. We have also acquired vineyards in Cauquenes and Curico with old vines of Carignan and Malbec where we practice organic farming.

The first activities at our vineyard began in 1987. Two partners with great illusions, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both holding long-standing experience in the wine industry, were certain Chile could improve on the quality it was producing at the time. In 1988, another two original partners joined in, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, each providing their qualified, complimentary views, and thus, Viña Montes was formally born, initially under the name Discover Wine Ltda., a saga that has made Chile internationally known in 100+ countries worldwide while providing extensive recognition and acclaim.
